Vestfossen - the culture capital
Vestfossen is a local community situated between Drammen and Kongsberg that has grown rich with cultural activity over the last ten years.
If you are planning av visit to Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium we would therefore recommend you make a day out of it and look up some of the other galleries, studios and institutions in the area.
Arena Vestfossen is situated next to Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium, further up the road in the same building as Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium and consisting of galleries, studios, Øvre Eiker cultural school and a stage room. Arena’s official opening is on the same day as Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium. In 2011 this will happen on May 8 at 3 pm (www.arenavestfossen.com).
Fosseholm Herregård, a beautilful 18th century “estate”, is situated about five minutes walk to the right of Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium. This estate is a remnant of the lumberindustry that once a pon a time made this area a rich and prosperous to live and work in (www.fossesholm.no). The same goes for Fossesholm Conference sentre, ten minutes walk to the left of Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium. Fossesholm is a 19th century industrial building and a fine example of how industrial buildings and areas can be convertet into elegant fusions between old and new architecture and landscape planning (www.fredfoss.no). This is possible to experinence in the beautilful gardens around Fossesholm where it is also possible to visit Haugiania Glass and Møllabekken Galleri in Shoddy huset (www.shoddyhuset.no).
Driving to Vestfossen it is possible to stop in Drammen and visit Drammen Museum for Art and Cultural History (www.drammens.museum.no) and between Drammen and Vestfossen, Gulden Kunstverk (www.guldenkunstverk.no). Driving a half an hour further you can visit the historical town of Kongsberh with its silver mines, cafè’s and jazz festival (www.kongsberg-jazzfestival.no)!
